Many companies choose to adopt statutory default articles of association upon incorporation rather than drafting their own bespoke articles of association.

Since 1 October 2009, such default articles of association have been known as the model articles. Prior to that date, they were known as 'Table A'. There have been a number of versions of and amendments to the model articles and to Table A since their first introduction in the Joint Stock Companies Act 1865 (but note that Table A was initially known as 'Table B' because in that Act they were preceded by a form of Memorandum of Association called ‘Form A').

The version of default articles that applies to any given company is the version in force at the date that the company was registered. Newer versions or amendments to the default statutory articles are not automatically applied
