What does Recognised Investment Exchange (RIE) mean?

A recognised investment exchange is an investment exchange that meets the recognition requirements laid down in the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Recognition Requirement for Investment Exchanges and Clearing Houses) Regulations 2001, SI 2001/995, which includes the London Stock Exchange plc.

The corporate governance statement The UK Corporate governance Code (UKCG Code) sets out standards of good practice in relation to leadership and effectiveness of the board of directors, remuneration, accountability, transparency and relations with shareholders. The FRC’s UKCG Code and associated guidance such as the Guidance on Board Effectiveness applies to companies with a listing of equity shares in the equity shares (commercial companies) category. In January 2024, the FRC published a new version of the UKCG Code (2024 UKCG Code). The 2024 UKCG Code applies to companies with a listing of equity shares in the equity shares (commercial companies) category with accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2025, with the exception of Provision 29 regarding internal controls, which applies to companies with accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2026. What are the main requirements for a premium or standard listing on the main market of the London Stock Exchange? The UK listing regime has two listing segments: standard and premium, each of which is divided into a number of categories. A company must comply with the requirements that are applicable to the category under which it is listed. To obtain a standard listing a company must comply with the minimum European Union (EU) directive standards, which are incorporated into the Listing Rules. A company seeking a standard listing must satisfy the basic eligibility conditions set out in chapter 2 of the Listing Rules. By agreeing to acquire the stock exchange business of PLUS Markets Group plc for the nominal sum of £1, ICAP Holdings Limited will gain a recognised exchange licence, one of only five granted by the Financial Services Authority.
