The Nuclear Installations Act 1965: The nia 1965 is the principal piece of UK legislation implementing the paris convention and Brussels Convention in the UK and sets out statutory provisions for nuclear liability and licensing of nuclear installations.

The UK nuclear liabilities regime The UK is a party to the international nuclear liabilities regime established by the 1960 Paris Convention and its subsequent amendment agreements. These international obligations are implemented by the Nuclear Installations Act 1965 (NuIA 1965), as amended by various primary and secondary legislation to reflect Convention amendments and UK policy choices within the permitted parameters. The most recent of these is the Energy Act 2023 (EnA 2023), which amends the NulA 1965 to implement the Convention on Supplementary Compensation (CSC), which is not yet in force. UK Civil Nuclear Regulatory Bodies Responsibilities for regulation of the UK civil nuclear industry are shared between several regulatory bodies, reflecting the distinction between the common duties owed by any generator of electricity and the additional duties arising from the unique attributes of nuclear energy generation. Nuclear-specific regulation was significantly consolidated in 2014 by the creation of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), replacing several bodies which had previously been responsible for regulating various different aspects of the nuclear industry. In addition, there are other government bodies which, while lacking general regulatory or supervisory powers, exercise specific facilitating and decision making functions and thereby have a significant role in the UK civil nuclear industry.
