For individuals who are not citizens of the EEA, Switzerland or the UK, there are various forms of residence rights that permit individuals to live in Ireland.
Persons who have been legally resident in the State for a minimum of five years (ie 60 months) on the basis of work permit/work authorisation/ working visa conditions may apply to the Department of Justice for a five year residency extension. In that context, they may also apply to be exempt from employment permit requirements.
The minimum five years period must be reflected in the corresponding Stamp 1 or Stamp 4 endorsements on a person's passport, and not by the dates of commencement and expiry of each work permit/work authorisation/working visa.
There are a number of Stamps which an immigration officer will put in a passport based on the outcome of an application for a permission to stay.
Types of stamp | Details |
Stamp 0 | Stamp 0 indicates permission to stay in Ireland for a temporary period, subject to conditions. |
Stamp 1 | Stamp 1 indicates permission to work |
