This Practice Note is intended for general private-sector commercial organisations in the UK. It identifies common risks associated with using AI in your business and suggests ways in which those risks can be managed. This Practice Note is not intended for organisations that develop or deploy AI solutions as a commercial offering for third parties. What is artificial intelligence?

There is no single definition of artificial intelligence (AI). Broadly speaking it is the simulation of human intelligence in machines, generally computer systems.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) defines AI as an umbrella term for a range of algorithm-based technologies that solve complex tasks by carrying out functions that previously required human thinking.
