Pathways to practice: "Don't compare yourself"

We spoke with Gabriella Yuin-Li Rasiah, Trainee Solicitor at DWF Law, as part of a spotlight series* featuring former 成人影音 student campus ambassadors, to learn more about her legal journey. Uncover Gabriella鈥檚 tips on embracing AI, staying patient and concentrating on your own path.

Why did you decide to study law?

Coming from Malaysia to study law in the UK, I was initially drawn to law for the breadth and flexibility it offered in shaping my future career. However, I soon learned that law is more than just a degree, it is the foundation of how society operates. Laws shape economies, governments and industries, influencing nearly every aspect of life. I quickly grew keen to understand these systems 鈥 how rules are made, enforced, challenged and changed. This led me to develop a strong interest in legal research, as it is key to understanding how laws shape industries, mitigate risks, and resolve disputes.

What inspired you to choose the solicitor route?

Initially, I envisioned myself as a barrister in criminal law, drawn to advocacy and courtroom debates. However, as I progressed in my studies, I realised that the barrister route 鈥 particularly the prospect of speaking in public 鈥 didn鈥檛 suit me. I found myself more interested in the problem-solving, strategy, and client-focused aspects of legal work rather than pure advocacy. The solicitor route offered a broader scope of involvement in cases, from legal research to negotiation and commercial decision-making. I enjoy working collaboratively, analysing complex legal issues, and providing practical solutions, which makes the solicitor path a better fit for my skills and professional aspirations.

How did using 成人影音 products enhance your study experience during your time at university?

As a student ambassador for 成人影音, I had the unique opportunity to receive training on their products and learn about the wider 成人影音 portfolio, which not only enhanced my own legal studies, but enabled me to support my peers with their legal research too.

成人影音鈥 comprehensive database allowed me to access a vast range of case law, statutes, and academic resources, making my legal research more efficient and thorough. The basic and advanced Lexis+ Legal Research certifications were a big bonus on my CV. I grew familiar with using keywords, filters and truncations, helping me better navigate niche and complex legal issues. Using 成人影音 products also allowed me to stay up to date with the latest developments in law, improving both my understanding and practical application of legal principles throughout my studies at university.

What challenges did you face while studying law, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I faced while studying law was the stress of being away from my family in Malaysia during the COVID-19 pandemic. I will admit, it was difficult to focus on my assessments when I knew I wouldn鈥檛 be able to see them for quite some time. This created emotional strain, which made it hard to stay focused on my studies. I overcame this by regularly communicating with my friends and family over the phone and online, which helped establish a virtual support system.

Attending online lectures was also a struggle during COVID, as the lack of in-person interaction and the isolating nature of remote learning made it difficult to stay motivated. To overcome these challenges, I established a structured study routine and made a conscious effort to make time for self-care in an effort to maintain both my academic and emotional wellbeing.

Does AI feature in, or impact, your day-to-day job?

Absolutely. I would say a lot of the solutions that we've used are the typical industry standard, such as Microsoft Copilot. I use this all the time, whether to draft a brief email, or summarise a document I鈥檓 reading.

What advice do you have for students about this wider industry change?

The rise of AI is transforming the legal industry, and it鈥檚 crucial for law students to adapt to these changes. AI is increasingly being used for legal research, document review and contract analysis. One of the key pieces of advice I鈥檇 offer students is to embrace technology as a tool to enhance efficiency and precision in their work, but not to place blind reliance on it. For example, an AI tool may be able to produce an email response, but the individual who presses 鈥榮end鈥 is accountable for any mistakes in the email. Make sure to proofread your work.

Legal professionals will still be needed to interpret complex legal issues, provide tailored advice, and navigate the nuances of human interaction. Therefore, students should focus on developing skills that AI can鈥檛 replicate 鈥 critical thinking, creativity, and emotional intelligence.

Moreover, it鈥檚 essential for students to stay updated on advancements in legal technology. By gaining proficiency in using AI tools and understanding their implications on legal practice, students can position themselves as leaders in an evolving market. Participating in courses or certifications on legal tech will make students more attractive to future employers who are looking for tech-savvy professionals.

Ultimately, embracing AI alongside traditional legal skills will enable students to thrive in the evolving landscape of the legal industry.

What advice would you give to current law students?

My advice to current law students seeking a training contract is to remain patient, embrace the learning process, and avoid comparing yourself to others. It can be tough when you see peers securing vacation scheme offers or interviews, and the pressure to match their progress can feel overwhelming. Personally, I struggled to get a training contract, only securing one after gaining some legal experience as a paralegal.

My advice would be: don't compare yourself. Instead of focusing on others, focus on absorbing knowledge and continuously improving your skills. Seek out mentorship opportunities and take part in relevant programmes that provide guidance and insight. I鈥檝e been fortunate to be involved in several mentorship programmes as mentor and mentee, which have helped me develop both personally and professionally. These programmes gave me a deeper understanding of the industry, practical advice, and confidence in my own abilities.

Remember, the journey to securing a training contract is about growth and resilience. It鈥檚 not just about the outcome, but about the process of learning, networking, and gaining experience. Be patient with yourself, keep pushing forward, and take every opportunity to learn and develop, whether it鈥檚 through internships, voluntary work, or even online courses. The key is to stay focused on your own path and trust that your hard work and perseverance will eventually lead to the right opportunity.

Some of the best advice that I've received from other trainees is: the only difference between you and someone else who's got a training contract is the length of time that you've taken to get your training contract. You will get there eventually.
