HELP Benidorm members visit our student friends in Valencia

School visit4_sm.jpg

We had a fantastic visit to Valencia. 36 of us descended upon SERPIS high school to see Chelo and her pupils. Some of the kids, who did the Benidorm visit, were over to talk before we were ushered into the hall for to hear the choir. They sang a selection of songs, beginning with "It's a long way to Tipperary". The pupil on the keyboard was very good, likewise the girl on the Cello. We all had a wonderful time and hope to repeat the experience next year!

Christmas Fayre at José Llorca Llinares Social Centre, Benidorm 4th December 2014

Come along to our annual Christmas Fayre for a lovely selection of Christmas goodies! It will be at the Social Centre (our normal meeting place) as last year, and will be from 11 until 2 pm. Join us for a fun morning and bring all of your friends!

Fund raising and donations - and how they are used

We continue to received donations from various sources including our friends at the Heroes Bar, the Boutique, and of course it is surprising how much we collect from our 'tiddlers' jars in various venues. And we are pleased to announce that we have donated €1,000 to MABS Cancer support group for the purchase of a new van. It is hoped that all the associations that have contributed towards it will have their names signwritten on the sides of the van.

Language Weekends

We have been contacted by an organisation that runs weekend courses for Spaniards to learn English 'by immersion'. They are looking for people who are happy to talk 100% in English to Spanish students. The setting is the beautiful Sierra del Segura in the province of Albacete. If you are interested in getting involved, contact our President, Bill on 607 387 040 for more details.

Fundraiser for Relleu Children's Home

On 27th September 2014 we held a very successful fund raising event in aid of the Children's Home at Relleu. Jean worked her socks off and produced and wonderful fun filled, entertaining afternoon at the Peppermill and all agreed it was well worth the 8 euros paid! This, plus the promise of another fundraiser in Benidorm has enabled up to pay some essential bills at the Children's home at Relleu.

An emotional farewell to our Ex President!

Last Thursday 16th October, we bid an emotional farewell to our previous long standing President of HELP Benidorm, Jan Elders. Sadly due to her husband, Kevin, having health problems, they have decided to relocate to the UK. Both Jan and Kevin have done a tremendous amount of work for HELP, and have helped shape it into the amazing organisation it is today. Without the energy and enthusiasm of people like Jan and Kevin, organisations such as HELP would not be able to exist. We all wish them well in their new life in the UK - they will be sorely missed!

Relleu Fundraiser Saturday 27th September & Charity Fair at El Cisne 28th September

We look forward now to Jean's Relleu Fundraiser at the Peppermill on Saturday, 1:00pm. She has lots of entertainers booked with a finishing time of 6:00pm - or when the last person falls over! I'm sure that tickets are still available, at €8. We bought ours from Jean but the Peppermill has lots to sell yet!!
It will be a busy weekend with the Charity Fair at El Cisne on Sunday. It will be opened by the Mayor, of Benidorm and the Vice-consul, at 12noon.
HELP International Benidorm will be manning a table, hopefully groaning with anti-weight loss goodies, on the day.

A report from our President, Bill on a BBQ fundraiser for the Emaus Children's home, Relleu

"Sophie and I visited Relleu, for the fundraiser BBQ on Saturday. It was my first time at the Emaus home for children and I liked the place, very much. It is a home in the best meaning of the word. One can see that it isn't just a family house but anyone who has children under the age of ten will have the same drawings on the fridge and toys lying about the place. It isn't a "Fussy" institution. While it doubles as a school it doesn't give that "Schoolroom" impression. The fine old Spanish country building is as welcoming as any that I have previously visited. Message from our President, Bill

"Seems to have been a short summer break, yes, it was short, we finished two weeks later than usual and will start two weeks early. Our first meeting of the 2014/15 session will be on Thursday 4th September at 11am. Arriving by ten o'clock allows time for a drink and a chat with other members. I understand that the unofficial motto of the Special Air Service is 'Learn by other people's mistakes'. We get together, discuss our own highs and lows and allow others to profit from our experience. (continued under 'read more')
